September 2021 Newsletter

2021-2022 NSIAAA Membership

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year!  As the beginning of the school year starts, there are many items to complete during our busy times. One of the most important items to give your full attention to is your Nebraska State Interscholastic Athletic Administrator Association membership.

The 2021-2022 NSIAAA membership will allow you to be a dual member of the NSIAAA and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association (NIAAA).  The cost of the dual membership is $250, which includes $2 million in liability insurance while on the job along with up to $7,500 in term life insurance coverage through the NSIAAA and NIAAA.  It is also important to know that your dual membership will serve as your registration for the Fall Conference at Kearney in November and the Spring Banquet on March 6, 2022, in Lincoln.

The membership of the NSIAAA has exceeded over 200 athletic administrators in recent years.  Our goal as the NSIAAA Board of Directors is to have a 100% enrollment rate for the 2021-2022 school year.  We need your commitment to our state organization and highly encourage you to promote the NSIAAA to your colleagues who may not be aware of the association and the great benefits that are part of the annual membership.  If you have not submitted your membership application, you can register on the NSIAAA website https://www.nsiaaa.org/.  You are able to pay with a credit card or you can send a check to me made payable to the NSIAAA.  We are in the process of a new registration site so please be patient with us and it will be up and running as soon as possible.  Your district representative will be emailing you to let you know when it is available.

This year’s NIAAA National Convention will be held in Denver, Colorado, from December 10-14, 2021.  Registration for this convention is currently open through the NIAAA website https://www.adconference.org/.  Current members of the NSIAAA and NIAAA are able to register using their current membership ID and information.  If you are a new member this year to the NSIAAA and NIAAA and need assistance, please contact Marc Mroczek at marc.mroczek@goswedes.org.

If you have any questions regarding your membership, please contact me.  I look forward to receiving your membership and payment, and we will see you at the Fall Conference in November.

Welcome to a New Year & Better Year – Hopefully!

Bill Fitzgerald, CMAA
NSIAAA Executive Director

As you sit down to look through this issue of the NSIAAA Newsletter, all of you are back in the mainstream of activities at your schools.  I want to take a moment to welcome you back to what hopefully will be a much different time from the past 18 months you may have gone through in your duties as an athletic / activities director.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in the Spring of 2020, it was a shock to all our systems.  It wiped out our entire spring activities schedule, moved school to some form of remote learning, and kept us from gathering in any kind of group to accomplish anything.  When the 2020-21 school year did start, our location in the country was much better off than other locales, and many schools started back to school either with masks, social distancing, or both while some continued to work remotely.  Some lost opportunities to compete that fall, but the individual districts were making decisions based on what they felt were best for their students.

Throughout this past year, changes were continuous.  When health departments took over what we could and could not do, it was always a moment of adjustment.  Just when you thought you had a plan in place, the plan was changing.  We watched and learned as many friends, relatives, and school district leaders fell victim to a virus that had no limits nor cared who we were financially or socially.  It did not care what race or gender you were or what your political preferences were.  If you did not take care of yourself, you likely would succumb to this pandemic.  Thankfully science came through for us with excellent vaccines that helped prevent both severe illness and death from the virus.  Unfortunately, this great breakthrough also became a political football, and not everyone who could be vaccinated chose to do so.

As I write this, a new and more contagious and deadly variant of the virus is in mainstream America.  We have a specific group of individuals, those age 12 and under, who cannot yet receive the vaccine – those kids in your community are not only at risk of falling ill but also are perfect carriers of the virus.  Unfortunately, we are not done with this pandemic yet, and it may be some time before we do achieve a level of protection to go completely back to what we consider as “normal”.  Do all you can to set the example and model good behavior!

Having made many adjustments in the 2020-21 school year to allow for competition in our schools, the “Athletic Director” has a toolbox full of gadgets to make them happen again in the 2021-22 school year.  Health departments and the NSAA may once again become the voices of what we can and cannot do in our schools and our activities.  Regardless of what hand we are dealt, we still have the most important job in our profession.  That is to provide a safe and protected area for our students to compete and play.

I am hopeful that we will be able to get back to as “near normal” as possible during 2021-22, but as we have learned in these past 18 months, the ability to adjust on the fly while keeping kids, coaches, and patrons safe is absolutely our most important job! If times get difficult, do not forget that you are the protector of many. You may have to make unpopular decisions, but if they help save lives, then they are without doubt the most important actions you can take.

We had several new AD’s get a jump start on the process of earning their certifications this summer at the NCA clinic by taking LTI 501 & 502.  Just as I look forward to helping them complete the work necessary to become CAA’s & CMAA’s, I look forward to helping our entire membership resume or start their own path to certification.  Fulfilling these requirements will not only help you in the day to day completion of your duties, it will be a value add to your school & district as you will be regarded legally as an expert in the field of athletic administration.

For all certifications you need to have a bachelor’s degree.  In order to earn your Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA) certification, you need to take LTI 501, 502 & 503.  The cost is $75 for members.  In order to earn your Registered Middle School Athletic Administrator (RMSAA) certification you need to meet all of the RAA requirements as well as be employed as an AD & take LTI 504, 700 & 701.  The cost is $100 for members.  In order to earn your Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) certification you need to meet all of the RAA requirements as well as be employed as an AD with 2 or more years of experience, take LTI 504 & 506, & pass the CAA exam.  The cost for members is $150.  In order to earn your Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) certification you need to already have earned your CAA certification, be employed as an AD, take LTI 508 & 510, take at least 1 600-level LTI course, take at least 1 700-level LTI course, take any 3 elective LTI courses, & complete a project.  The cost for members is $175.

We will be offering LTI 503 – Enhancing Organization Management & LTI 707 – Improvement of Athletic Programs & Personnel Through Assessment (taught by NIAAA president-elect Mike McGurk) at our fall conference.  Registration will be available through the AMP app provided by final forms.  In order for manuals for the courses to be ordered & sent in time for the conference, all registrations will be due by Tuesday, November 2, 2021.  It is best to use a personal email address when registering rather than a school email address as the digital versions of the course manuals are often blocked by school domains.

In addition to in-person course offerings at our fall conference, you can take courses online through the NIAAA by visiting https://members.niaaa.org/page/LeadershipTraining.  There are webinar options where you would take a class from 4:00pm-8:00pm eastern time, or online options that are at your own pace.  The cost for either of these options for members is $125.  If you are missing 1 or 2 courses for a certification, these are great options to get that taken care of!

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions that you might have regarding LTI course offerings or earning your certification.

Message from the President

Well, here we are again and some of us are still wearing masks and COVID protocols are still part of everyday education.  However, there is light at the end of the tunnel, keep plugging away; lean on each other and stay the course.

Your leadership skills will get tested.  Now more than ever, your toughness and the ability to stay positive is at a premium.  Constantly check on your coaches, teachers, students, secretaries, and custodians.  Everybody is important and we need to communicate with them daily.

PLCS Superintendent, Dr. Rikli, shared this with the administrators in my district. You may have seen this before; it is a link to Admiral William McRaven's commencement address at the University of Texas.

There are some excellent leadership principles and hopefully a bit of inspiration. We are all so blessed to be in the positions we are in.  The video is about 20 minutes long but a tremendous watch.

We are doing the right things for the right reasons. It would be easier for us to give up. It would be easier to ring the bell. Don't ring the bell...

District II Spotlight - Nate Greene

I was born and raised in Gering, Nebraska and graduated from Gering High School where I was a  three-sport athlete participating in cross country, basketball and track. After graduated from  Gering I attended Doane College before graduating from Midland University where I was a  collegiate track athlete. During college I began coaching volleyball at Premier Volleyball in  Omaha where I had the privilege of working with some of the best high school volleyball players and coaches in the state of Nebraska.

While coaching at Premier Volleyball in 2011, I was given the opportunity to assist Paul  Giesselmann and the Midland University volleyball program in Fremont, Nebraska. I had the  opportunity to work under one of the best coaches in the NAIA while continuing to learn the ins  and outs of volleyball at a more advanced level.

I took my first head coaching job at Nebraska Wesleyan University as the head junior varsity  volleyball coach under varsity coach Raina Cain. I student taught at Wahoo Public Schools while  I was coaching at NWU and eventually graduated in 2014 from Midland with a K-12 Special  Education degree.

I took my first teaching job at Cedar Bluffs Public Schools in 2014 as a K-12 Special Education  teacher where I was an assistant high school volleyball coach under the great Janelle Stansberry  before eventually taking over the program in 2016. While I was leading the Wildcat volleyball  program, I was given the opportunity to transition into a larger role as the Athletic Director at  Cedar Bluffs. At that point, I decided to give up my coaching role to make sure I was giving my  full attention to my new position as Athletic Director while still having time for my family.

I was fortunate enough to marry my wife, Allison, in 2016 and we began our journey together. We purchased a house in Wahoo while I continued to work in Cedar Bluffs and Allison was  employed in Lincoln at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital as an Occupational Therapist. As an Athletic  Director, my wife quickly began spending a majority of her extra time at a field or in a  gymnasium. Although we were crazy busy and I was often gone a lot of evenings, we were  fortunate to add to our family on July 4th, 2018 when Brystol came into the world with a bang.

In 2020, we moved to Fremont, Nebraska and Allison took a job a Methodist Fremont Health  while I continued to be actively involved at Cedar Bluffs. I’m currently in my 7th year at Cedar  Bluffs and have had a multitude of opportunities to grow professionally. I’ve worked with great  staff members and been mentored by wonderful educators. Most importantly, I’ve had the  opportunity to be surrounded by great students who have been motivated, inspiring, and have  made my first seven years in education memorable.

Brystol is now three and growing up inside of a gymnasium like both of her parents. On  Thanksgiving Day, Brystol will become a big sister to brother Taytum and begin her important role as a big sister. Allison and I are very fortunate to be actively involved in Cedar Bluffs and  are eager to see what the future has instore for our family.

District I Spotlight - Gus Brown

0.jpeg

My name is Gus Brown and I am the new Activities Director for Beatrice High School.  I grew up in Kearney and graduated from Kearney High School.  I attended Kearney State College after high school and competed on the golf team.  I attended college for a year and a half before deciding to join the United States Navy.  The Navy was a great experience as I got to travel the world visiting 13 different countries.  After the Navy I attended Chadron State College and graduated with my Bachelor’s in K-12 PE, 7-12 Health and Coaching.

I was hired as a PE teacher for Valentine Middle School.  During my tenure there I coached football, basketball and track.  Starting in my third year there I was hired as the MS Activity Director while also serving as the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach.  I attained my Master’s Degree in Secondary Administration from Chadron State College in 2002.  In 2010 I took over as the 7-12 Activities Director for Valentine Community Schools where I was until moving to Beatrice.  I am starting my 26th year in education and my 24th year in an AD role.  I have served on the NSAA Middle Levels Activities Board and the NSAA Classification Committee.

In my free time I enjoy going back to Valentine to see my daughter, son-in-law and two grandkids.  I am also an avid golfer and a big Husker fan.

My move to Beatrice has been a great experience.  Moving into a bigger school with many more activities has been a rewarding experience.  I have had tremendous support from all the people I work with and the community.  I look forward to meeting and working with all of you!

The New ADs workshop 2021-22

The New AD”s Workshop was held during the NCA clinic, with the timeslot being 4:00-5:30 so ADs could attend all sessions and still come to this.  It was a success with many of the new ADs attending and even though it ran a little long no one was complaining.  The workshop was broken down into several small presentations put on by the board and the district representatives and the information presented was on topics that the new ADs would need to know and use right away.

It was started by our Executive Director introducing himself and the presenters and then the new ADs introducing themselves.  It was a way for the new ADs to start putting faces with names of people they would be hearing from throughout the year.  Mr. Fitzgerald then explained what the NSIAAA/NIAA was and how helpful these organizations could be to the new ADs and what we could do for them.  Dallas Sweet followed up with information on how to find important things from the NSAA website and who to contact if you had questions about forms or information needed to do your job.

After that several other topics were covered to help out the new ADs get going in their job.  Jack Tarr talked about the mentoring program and early meetings that you as an AD would host the first few days back to school.  Jenny Wagner discussed the concussion awareness programs and what your responsibilities were as AD.  Kayla Fisher led the presentation on early things to check on right away before school started and then why it was important to start on next year getting contracts and officials done.  Nate Larson presented material on Activity Coverage for contests and getting the workers for contests.  Dallas then followed up with contest set up and program sites and things to make sure your games and contests went smoothly.  Jeremy VanAckeren and Tom Kerkman finished the program with information on Communication and how important it is to keep everyone informed  on what is going on.  A small time was left to answer  questions and everyone's contact information was handed out to the new ADs so we could help them in any way that we could.

The next day LTI courses 501, (taught by Nate Larson and Jack Tarr) and 502, (taught by Bill Fitzgerald and Keith Muller) were presented to 16 new ADs.  This was a long day but it gave the new ADs information that they could use to start their profession and get them interested in obtaining their certification to become a CAA and CMAA.  Each of the ADs hopefully gathered information that will make their job easier during those two days and they found someone who they could contact to help them out with just a phone call or email.

Along with these offerings the New AD Mentoring program was continued. Each new AD was given a Mentor that would be there to help them throughout the year. Names, email addresses, and school numbers were shared between the New AD mentee and their mentor and a manual was shared to help both parties get started. This program is used to help new ADs with their jobs and let veteran ADs share their knowledge and expertise to help when questions and concerns come up. This program was started a few years ago and it is continually changing and evolving so that new ADs, years one through five, have someone they know they can contact if they have questions. If you have questions about this program or would like to become involved with it, please contact Jack Tarr, at jtarr55@gmail.com or call 402-580-0585 . We are always looking for mentors and in case we missed a new AD, let us know and we will get you hooked up with a mentor.

Retired ADs Information

Retired and looking for something to do?  The NSIAAA/NIAAA is inviting all retired ADs to become part of the NSIAAA/NIAAA and to come back and help in many different ways sharing their past expertise.  For just $30 to join the NSIAAA/NIAAA we would welcome you back with open arms.  By joining the NSIAAA/NIAAA you would be invited to the fall conference and the spring banquet to mingle with the current ADs and see some of the ADs that were working when you were.  By joining we would ask you if you would like to, help out at the fall clinic, teach some LTI classes if you are qualified to do so, or share your knowledge with young ADs at the social events.  You were and we would still like you to be a valuable member of our profession.  You have expertise in many fields of knowledge and our current ADs could use you to help them with their knowledge base today.  Another benefit of joining is that if you would like, you could purchase a $5000 life insurance policy for $12.50, as the NSIAAA has a group policy that you could purchase and have.  We have several retired ADs who have taken advantage of becoming a member again and enjoy being around men and women who they shared a lot of time with when they were working.  So in summary for $30 you can become a member and for $42.50 you can become a member and have a life insurance policy as a benefit.

Please consider this an invitation to rejoin our organization. If you would like more information contact Jack Tarr at jtarr55@gmail.com or check the NSIAAA website under membership. We hope to see you this fall.

President Elect Message

Jordan Cudney- AD, North Platte High School

Hello members of the NSIAAA!!!!

It is my hope that we all were able to find time to step back and take a deep breath to recover from the fast paced, challenging, and fulfilling 2020-2021 school year prior to the start of the school year this fall! However, as you all know, the time is now upon us to re-energize, refocus, and prepare for what lies ahead this school year. We do not know what the 21-22 school year will bring us or what will come our way, but I want to encourage us all with these four things:

HARD WORK: There is NO SUBSTITUTE for hard work! Much can be accomplished when all parts of the organization step up and give their best effort. May you be leading your coaches and staff in a positive way and leading the way with the time and effort you put in.

DETAILS/ORGANIZATION: "Major in the minors"....No matter what you are doing in life, take care of the little details knowing that doing so will allow you to be successful in a larger scope!

COMMUNICATION: May we all continue to communicate with the stakeholders of our programs/teams. Continue to work diligently across the board to make sure all people feel communicated with on a weekly basis!

FOCUS ON PROCESS: May we work and focus on the process of getting our teams/athletes to improve throughout the course of the season in order to make sure they are competing at our best at the end of the year!

Wishing you all the best this coming year and look forward to seeing all your schools compete in the NSAA competitions this fall season!

Thank You for the Opportunity

Bill Fitzgerald, CMAA

Greetings to you all – many of you know me already from being around education for 39 years before my retirement in 2017, while some of you may not be familiar with my experiences at all.  Having served three school districts - Central Heights in Richmond, KS for 3 years, Louisville Public Schools for 24 years as a three-sport coach & AD, and my last 12 years at Fremont High School as AD / Asst. Principal, I was fortunate to coach many sports and help many coaches by serving as an athletic director for twenty-four of those years.  I got involved in the NSIAAA my first year of being an AD, and I cannot tell you how fortunate I was to sit down and visit with Steve Joekel, Larry Munksgaard, and Mike Purdy while picking up some valuable information and skills in how to serve in the role of Athletic Director, listening to some of the best in our state.   It also was helpful growing up as a Coach & AD’s kid, which meant much of my formative years I got to learn from one of the best!

I had the opportunity to serve on the NSIAAA Board of Directors a few years after becoming a member, and eventually was elected to a leadership role on the NSIAAA Executive Team, serving as President of this organization in 2011-12.  I stayed involved in the NSIAAA after my term by serving as mentoring and retired member coordinator.  During that same time, I also became involved at the NIAAA, as I was selected to serve on the NIAAA Publications Committee.  This year and next, I will conclude my term on that committee as the Chairman of a great group of professionals.  This past year, I was honored to be selected by the board as only the 2nd Executive Director of the NSIAAA, following the path laid down by the now retired Mike Purdy, who served in the role for seventeen years.

I am humbled to serve in this position, and I thank the NSIAAA board for the opportunity to serve all of you in this role.  The main function of the NSIAAA is to help educate athletic directors in our state while they serve their individual districts and schools.  I am honored to have the chance to lead such an outstanding group of professionals, and I am hopeful you will all become involved in some way in YOUR state and national organizations while you are an AD at your school.

As Nebraska State AD’s, I would encourage you all to do the following this year:

  • Renew or Join the NSIAAA/NIAAA Dual Membership – the benefits are many to you and your professional organizations at the state and national level are there to help serve you in your duties!

  • Part of your membership is registration to both the NSIAAA Fall Conference in Kearney (November 6-8, 2021, at the Kearney Holiday Inn) and the NSIAAA Spring Awards Banquet in Lincoln (Sunday March 6, 2022, at Wilderness Ridge GC).  The new date is due to State Girls & Boys BB being held together March 7-11, 2022.  Some of the best professional growth you can be part of at our state level for your specific duties as an AD happen at these two events, which are INCLUDED in your NSIAAA Membership.

  • Take part in an LTI Course that is offered at the NSIAAA Fall Conference.  One required class for the CAA Certification will be taught:

    • LTI 503 - Athletic Administration: Enhancing Organization Management on Saturday 11/6/21 from 3 to 7 pm

  • We are also honored to have NIAAA President Elect, Athletic Director Mike McGurk from Lee’s Summit North coming to our Fall Conference -

    • Mr. McGurk will teach LTI 707:  Athletic Administration: Improvement of Athletic Programs and Personnel Through Assessment on Saturday 11/7/21 from 7:30 to 11:30 am.  This is a great class that counts toward your CMAA certification on a topic that everyone can use help on!

  • The NIAAA Professional Development Program is designed to help any AD better themselves and improve their skills & knowledge.  Courses are offered on-line during various times of the year, and ALL courses are available each year at the National Conference.  Beginning courses are generally offered at the State Association Level.  This link is a guide to what is offered in each Leadership Training Course: NIAAA Professional Development Program

  • At one of our clinics, at a ballgame, or at any meeting – take time to TALK to your fellow AD’s, whether it is job related, you have a question about how to do something, or just to visit and get to know each other.  We all have a wealth of information and knowledge to share.  Our socials are a great time to learn something new!

Here is hoping for a good school year that is as normal as possible for all of you - your NSIAAA Board of Directors is ready to help make it one of your best years ever!
